Two on Tuesday with Jenny Knipfer

Jenny Knipfer Title

This week’s guest for the Two on Tuesday author spotlight is Wisconsin Christian historical fiction author, Jenny Knipfer. In her inspirational series, By The Light of The Moon, she creates complex characters and plots through a split timeline and multiple view points. Her characters traverse caverns of emotional pain to reach healing.

Jenny’s Two on Tuesday Facts:

  1. In my first novel, Ruby Moon, I include a recipe for an herbal healing balm. One of my characters in the book is an Ojibwe medicine woman and influences and teaches the main character, Jenay, about herbal medicine and the deep inner healing which can be found. I have always been interested in natural medicine, and it was fulfilling to be able to include a little natural healing wisdom in my first novel.
  2. I started writing my first novel the day I was no longer able to work due to my continuing disability with multiple sclerosis. It has been a challenge for me to write. My hands don’t function well, so I write on my iPad with one or two fingers and edit on my computer. Autocorrect is both a blessing and a curse. 🙃 Sometimes I speak what I want to write with the help of my iPad. Combatting fatigue and muscles which don’t function correctly is a daily battle. In my second novel, Blue Moon, I highlighted multiples sclerosis through one of my characters and wrote about what I know. I hope it brings awareness to a disease that many people live with.

Two on Tuesday with Wendy May Andrews

This week’s guest for the Two on Tuesday author spotlight is sweet historical romance author, Wendy May Andrews. Known for her “swoon-worthy happy endings,” her novels include stories from proxy brides and orphan trains to tales of the English aristocracy.

Wendy’s Two on Tuesday Facts:

  1. I became an author based on a dare from my husband. I love to read – my nose would always be buried in a book. He challenged me to write one instead of reading all the time. I didn’t think I could do it but decided to give it a try. And now I love writing almost as much as reading. That first book even got published!
  2. My hubby and I love to travel. We now often combine my writing with travelling – researching my books, finding great location inspiration for my books, historical research, and so on. The best research trip was three years ago when we went to England (see photo below) – I have one complete series based on the research and a second one is being written.

Two on Tuesday with Melina Druga

MelinaDruga Title

This week’s guest for the Two on Tuesday author spotlight is  historical fiction and nonfiction author and historical blogger, Melina Druga. Utilizing extensive research, her novel Angel of Mercy is the first in a trilogy following nurse Hettie and her family as they navigate the challenges and heartbreak World War 1 brings.

Melina’s Two on Tuesday Facts:

  1. I wrote my first historical fiction novel when I was 10 years old. It was about two sisters in an 1840s Ohio canal town. I still have it, although the writing was done in pencil and, after more than 30 years, is so light I can barely read it.  It was the first of many novels. Angel of Mercy, however, is the first novel I’ve opted to share with the world.  But it won’t be the last.
  2. Angel of Mercy was inspired by the hard rock song “Mama” by My Chemical Romance from the album The Black Parade. The song references war imagery, and the album’s liner notes feature a sepia photograph reminiscent of World War One. If it weren’t for that song, Angel of Mercy wouldn’t exist and neither would any of my works-in-progress. (See below for the vlog discussion.)

Two on Tuesday with Diana Lesire Brandmeyer

DianaBrandmeyer Title

This week’s guest for the Two on Tuesday author spotlight is Midwest-based author of both historical and contemporary romance, Diana Lesire Brandmeyer. Known for featuring strong women characters in her novels, A Bride’s Dilemma in Friendship, Tennessee, features the tagline, “She promised to protect her home and sister. He accepted a man’s property, neither of them expected an arranged marriage.” It is the first book in her Frontier Legacy series with the second available in September 2020.

Diana’s Two on Tuesday Facts:

  1. I said I’d never write historicals and then I moved into a house built before the Civil War (see photo below). It used to be a roadside inn and I was hooked on stories that had to have happened there. There were rumors of the army camped in the front yard and Al Capone visiting a few times.
  2. Goats have always fascinated me since I worked at the petting zoo at Six Flags. I wrote about one in a children’s book, The Trouble with Ralph and more recently, the goat, Mr. Jackson, who is quite a character, appears in A Bride’s Dilemma in Friendship, Tennessee. My neighbor had a goat for a while that would come to visit me and often tried to get into the house. Word of warning – never feed a stray goat; he’ll love you forever (see photo below).

Two on Tuesday with Jessica Marie Holt

This week’s guest for the Two on Tuesday author spotlight is historical and contemporary fiction author, Jessica Marie Holt. Her Unsung Legacies series is an interconnected series of family dramas centered around a small town in rural North Carolina, told in a lyrical, literary style.

Jessica’s Two on Tuesday Facts:

  1. I rely on music to inspire me and help me stay in the mood and vibe of a story. I will often pick a specific song that reflects a specific book, and listen to it often as I write. For example, I listened to Gregory Alan Isakov’s “The Stable Song” on repeat as I wrote Just Before Dawn, the first book in my historical fiction series. I live in a somewhat rural area of North Carolina, where my historical fiction books take place, and I will often drive through the countryside listening to folk, bluegrass and blues. Hearing the music, and passing by picket fences, ponds, wooded areas, and dilapidated hundred-year-old houses really connects me to the history and spirit of the setting.
  2. I do extensive research, and fuss a lot over historical details, like whether a specific tree existed in North Carolina in 1868. This leads me down some rabbit holes, and forces some rewrites. I was once researching whether indoor bathrooms existed in New York City boarding houses, and ended up learning about the history of bathrooms through the ages. And when I found out that many, if not most larger homes in rural NC had separate outdoor kitchens, I had to rewrite a number of scenes in Sunlight and Shadows to reflect this fascinating fact.
