About the Story
Some stars guide us. Others blind us.
Alice Ann Lark remembers everything, most especially the husband and daughter she abandoned for a life on the sea. Almost four years later, having failed to achieve her adventurous dreams, she would never ask for a forgive-and-forget return to Larksong, nor deserve it. Tormented by vivid flashbacks that become more frequent every day, she sequesters herself in the Ghost Forest, a wasteland of barren trees surrounded by Washington’s mountainous beauty—the perfect metaphor for her now empty life.
Following a year of agonizing adversity, Cade Lark has one final mission to complete before he can find peace with his daughter—to locate the origin of the Larks’ mysterious Gifts. His only clue, however, is a compass his mother died to protect and is now in his estranged wife’s possession. Determined to either restore the past or lay it to rest, he asks Alice Ann to join him on the adventure, exactly as she always wanted him to. If he can’t win her back by the time they find the origin, she’s free to leave. No strings attached, nor questions asked.
Surrounded by a hurricane of unresolved questions, Cade and Alice Ann set off to discover the truth behind Larksong’s legacy. Unbeknownst, a worse storm is lurking beyond the horizon, and when the clouds finally clear, there may not be anything left to save.
Praise for Stars in the Storm
“I read this book in one sitting. Many hours of pure enjoyment. The author gets right into the story and it is constantly moving along. I have read all the Larksong Legacy books and grown to enjoy the personalities of each character. It ends on exactly the right note. Be prepared to laugh and weep.”
~ Judy, Goodreads Review
“Stars in the Storm was one of the first historical fiction novels I read in 2025, and it lived up to (and even exceeded, in my opinion) the other three books in the Larksong Legacy series. I wasn’t an editor for this book, but I’ve faithfully read each book as it was released, and this is a great series with biblical and historical significance, set in 1800s Washington State (my home state!). Kelsey Gietl is a talented author of many noteworthy historical fiction novels.”

“I’ve read the entire Larksong series, and enjoyed them all. I especially liked “Stars in the Storm” and the way the main characters, Alice Ann and Cade, changed as they encountered different challenges in life. I wasn’t expecting Alice Ann’s story to develop in the way it did, and it was fun and intriguing reading about it. I admired the strength of character that Cade developed throughout the story. The plot had several twists and turns and kept me turning the pages. I also enjoyed the supernatural gifts the Larksong brothers (and others in the series) demonstrated, that added an extra interest and novelty to the story. I plan to read more books by Kelsey Gietl.”
~ Nancy K, Amazon Review
“Throughout the series, I’ve gone from annoyance to near hatred for Alice Ann. So I wondered, could I care enough about her to root for her in her own book? Under Kelsey Gietl’s careful characterization, the answer is a resounding yes!”
~ Jennifer Q. Hunt, author of the Sorrow and Song and Wisteria House series
